Hip fractures are classified
by anatomic location and can be categorised as femoral neck fractures,
intertrochanteric fractures and subtrochanteric fractures, and these
can each be sub classified.
Femoral neck
fractures and intertrochanteric fractures commonly require open reduction
and internal fixation. Neck fractures are more common in women because
of several factors including osteoporosis. Most elderly patients require
preoperative medical evaluation to define and treat anaesthetic risk.
