The Shoulder

The shoulder is the joint between the arm and the trunk, together with the surrounding tissue of the shoulder blade (scapula) and the clavicle. It is a ball-and-socket joint which allows the rotating movement in the arm. See picture below.

Shoulder Surgery

Rotator Cuff-Tendonitis
It is the inflammation of the rotator cuff muscle. tendonitis is the result of overuse of the arm when working overhead. Like painting the ceiling etc., In older people it could be from wear and tear from rubbing against a bone spur on the bone just above the rotator cuff, the acromion bone. Pain and weakness are the main sign and symptom.

Shoulder Bursitis
It is inflammation of the lubricating tissue (bursa or lubricating sac) lying between the rotator cuff and the acromion bone. Inflammation is due to overuse or rubbing of the bursa against the acromion. Pain is the main symptom.

Impingement Syndrome
The rotator cuff tendon and the bursa sac (lubricating tissue) can be pinched when the arm is raised forward. This repetitive movement can cause inflammation and swelling thus cause the painful situation known as Impingement Syndrome.
